VOLLEYBALL COMES UP SHORT IN GSC CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH

PENSACOLA, Fla., – Top seed and tournament host West Florida recorded 13 blocks, hit .364 as a team and held North Alabama to a .163 showing as the Argonauts claimed the 2017 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 victory Sunday in the tournament finals. With the 19-25, 13-25, 17-25 loss, UNA is 27-7 on the season and will wait to see if it gets a bid to the upcoming NCAA South Region Tournament. An online selection show will be aired Monday evening at 6:30 (CST) at www.ncaa.com.

On Sunday, UWF (28-6) made late runs in each set to pull away for victories. The Argonauts led 19-18 in the opening set before consecutive points made the score 21-18 to prompt a UNA timeout. After the break, West Florida continued to pull away, with two more kills. A kill by tournament MVP Rachel Neblett gave the home team a 24-19 lead before a double block ended the game.

North Alabama struggled at the net in the second set, hitting .000 with nine errors and just nine kills. The Argos led wire-to-wire in the 25-13 victory.

UNA held an early 3-2 lead in the third set. UWF, however, broke a 5-5 tie with four straight points and never looked back. The Lions got within three at 14-11, but could get no closer.

Lexie Bradley led the Lions with a match-high 14 kills. Ana Gabriela Pacheco added 10 kills on the day. Both were named to the all-tournament team. Jayden Davila-McClary added 35 assists and 13 digs. Ashtyn Kapovich rounded out the top defensive showings with 12 digs.

UNA was ranked No. 4 in the most recent NCAA South Region Poll. Eight teams make the tournament, including conference champions from the GSC, SSC and the Southern Intercollegiate Conference as an automatic bid, followed by the next five highest-ranking teams.
