LIONS FALL 88-77 AT WEST ALABAMA

LIVINGSTON – West Alabama outscored the University of North Alabama men's basketball team 23-12 over the final 5:13 to pull away for an 88-77 victory over the Lions Thursday in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools. With the loss, UNA falls to 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in GSC play.

With the score tied at 65-65 at the 5:13 mark, the Lions were 2-of-11 from the floor down the stretch while the home team did its damage from the free throw line. The Tigers were 16-of-18 from the charity stripe over the final 4:30 to help secure the win.

UNA trailed 33-30 at the break but grabbed momentum early in the second half. Back-to-back three-point baskets by Kendarius Smith gave UNA a 36-35 lead at the 18:46 mark. After UWA regained a three-point lead, Kendall Stafford scored five points during an 11-1 run by the Lions to give UNA its largest lead at 52-45 with 12:22 remaining.

The Tigers, however, answered. A tip-in by Gavin Robinson gave UWA a 60-59 lead at the 7:39 mark and the lead changed hands two more times before a basket by Sharwyn McGee tied the score at 65-65 and set the stage for West Alabama's run in the closing minutes.

UNA finished the game shooting 35.2 percent from the floor. The Lions also finished 9-of-26 from three-point range, including three from Smith. Four players reached double figures in scoring for North Alabama, with Jeff Hodge leading the way with 15 points. Smith and Stafford added 14 points each while Adrian Smith tossed in 11 points for UNA.

UNA will play at Montevallo on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
