UNA WOMEN TOP TIGERS TO OPEN GSC PLAY

LIVINGSTON – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team opened Gulf South Conference play by rallying for an 84-67 win at West Alabama on Thursday. The Lions trailed 40-36 at the half before 48.5 percent from the floor over the final two quarter to get the victory. With the win, UNA improves to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in GSC play.
 
Emma Wallen led the way with 28 points for North Alabama. She connected on six three-point baskets and finished the game 10-of-21 shooting from the floor. Ivy Wallen added another double-double with 21 points and 10 assists. She also pulled down six rebounds to finish four shy of a triple-double.
 
After UNA took a 25-18 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lions went cold in the second period. The Tigers used a 22-11 spurt of their own to grab the lead. West Alabama shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the first half.
 
The Tigers led 38-36 before drawing a foul with less than a second remaining in the half. Former UNA player Kierra Groce sank two free throws to give the home team the four-point lead at the break.
 
It didn't take long for the Lions to regain the lead in the second half. UNA started the third quarter on an 8-0 run to grab a 44-40 lead at the 8:27 mark. UWA got within two but could never catch up.
 
UNA led 68-63 with 5:18 remaining in the fourth quarter before closing strong. Michaela DeKilder started a 10-0 run with consecutive baskets. She was fouled on the second one and hit the free throw to complete the three-point play. A three-pointer by Emma Wallen and two free throws by Ivy Wallen pushed the lead to 78-63 and the lead remained double digits the rest of the way.
 
DeKilder finished with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Lions. Brittany Panetti added 12 points on the night.
 
For the game, UNA held a 47-36 rebounding advantage and forced 24 West Alabama turnovers that led to 30 points.
 
Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led West Alabama (2-5 overall, 0-1 GSC) with 20 points.
 
UNA will play at Montevallo on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
