LAST-SECOND SHOT SINKS UNA MEN

FLORENCE – With the score tied at 79-79, Lee grabbed a defensive rebound with less than 10 seconds remaining and raced down court for the winning basket as time expired to pick up an 81-79 win at North Alabama Monday in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. Jason Landman's basket with 1.8 seconds to play sealed the win as UNA saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and fall for the first time this season at Flowers Hall.

Kendall Stafford scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half, but the Lions (7-4 overall, 2-2 GSC) let a 44-41 lead at the break slip away. The Flames shot 57.7 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes to rally for the win.

Lee made its move midway through the second half and led by as many as five in the final 5:30 of playing time. The Lions responded with a 7-2 run, including back-to-back three-point baskets by Stafford to give UNA a 72-71 lead with 3:46 remaining.

After a basket and free throw gave Lee a two-point lead, a pair of foul shots by Stafford tied the game at 74-74 with 2:08 to play. The teams then traded three-pointers, with Stafford again coming through for the Lions. After UNA got a defensive stop, Jeff Hodge gave the home team a 79-77 lead with a jumper with 48.8 seconds remaining.

The Flames responded with a basket to tie the game and were in position to win after a UNA miss in the final 8.7 seconds.

Lee held a 43-33 rebounding advantage and got 13 second-chance points. UNA shot 51.6 percent from the floor in the first half but connected on just 12-of-34 shots over the final 20 minutes.

Adrian Smith added 14 points for the Lions while Hodge finished with 11 points. Landman led Lee (8-3 overall, 3-1 GSC) with 22 points.

UNA will take a 15-day break before returning to action after the holidays with a GSC road swing. The Lions will play at Mississippi College on Jan. 2 before playing two days later at Delta State.
