SOFTBALL TEAM WINS TWICE TO OPEN FALCON FRENZY

MONTEVALLO – Bailey Nelson was 4-for-6 at the plate and Raven Cole recorded two victories in the circle as the University of North Alabama softball team opened play at the Montevallo Falcon Frenzy with wins over No. 16 Indianapolis and Ursuline on Friday. UNA defeated UIndy 5-4 and Ursuline 5-3 to improve to 6-2 on the season.
 
In the opener against No. 16 Indianapolis, Hannah Shollenberger's RBI-single to right center in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Nelson from second base to lift UNA to the 5-4 victory. It was the third lead change in the final three innings as the Lions got the walk-off win.
 
UNA entered the bottom of the inning tied 4-4 after the Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the frame. Nelson led off the inning with a single before reaching second on a walk by Madison Daniel. Shollenberger then came to the plate and record her second walk-off hit of the season.
 
All four of Indianapolis' runs were unearned. Hillary Carpenter started the game, but left after six complete innings with the game deadlocked in a 4-4 tie. Cole came in to pitch the top of the seventh. UIndy got a leadoff single and reached second on a passed ball. The runner, however, was called out for leaving second early and Cole recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
 
The Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the third inning to take an early lead. A pair of errors on UNA led to the two unearned runs.
 
A four-run fifth inning gave North Alabama a 4-2 lead. The Lions loaded the bases with no outs before a two-run double by Nelson tied the game. UNA the scored on an error to take the lead before an RBI-single by Anna Gayle Norris put the Lions ahead by two runs.
 
UIndy scored on a throwing error and added another run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the top of the seventh. The go-ahead run, however, was left stranded at second base.
 
Norris finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Nelson also drove in two runs on a 2-for-4 showing.
 
Against Ursuline, UNA jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding on for the 5-3 victory. Nelson led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and added a second-inning triple for the Lions. Both hits drove in runs as North Alabama took a 2-0 lead.
 
UNA sent eight batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring three runs off three hits. An RBI-single by Sabrina Gilliam and a two-run single through the right side by Madison Daniel gave the Lions the 5-0 lead.
 
Ursuline responded with three runs in the top of the fourth but could get no closer. Hannah Bodenhorn came in to pitch the final three innings to get the save in relief of Cole (4-1).
 
At the plate, Nelson was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Daniel also drove in two runs on a 3-for-4 showing.
 
UNA will play Truman State Saturday at 9 a.m. before closing out the event at 3:45 against the host Falcons.
