UNA SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH SHORTER

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team got a 5-4 win in the opener before Shorter exploded for a 10-0 mercy-rule victory in the nightcap Saturday as the two teams split a Gulf South Conference double-header. The two teams will face off Sunday at 1 p.m. to decide the series.

In the first game, the Lions (13-6 overall, 3-2 GSC) trailed 3-1 before a four-run fifth inning gave them a 5-3 lead. Shorter added a single run in the top of the sixth but could get no closer. Hillary Carpenter recorded the complete-game victory to improve to 6-3 on the season. The senior from Hatton allowed four runs off five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work. Only two of the runs were earned.

At the plate, Marissa Hancock was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Reagan Tittle and Anna Gayle Norris also each drove in a run while Hannah Shollenberger had a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning that scored two runs. Tittle also scored in the fourth inning on a RBI-ground out by Sydney Sanders.

In the second game, the Lions were held to two hits while Shorter scored early and often. The Hawks (12-5 overall, 4-1 GSC) plated two runs each in the top of the first and third innings to grab a 4-0 lead. A six-run fourth inning then put the game out of reach.

Shorter sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame, highlighted by a three-run home run by Kameron Carter. The Hawks finished with seven hits, including two home runs.

Raven Cole (5-2) took the loss in the circle for the Lions. She pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowed seven runs (three earned) off four hits. Marissa Honeycutt pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up three runs off three hits.

Hancock and Tittle each singled to represent the only two hits for North Alabama.

The two teams will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday to wrap up the three-game GSC series. All first responders and members of the military will receive free admission at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park.
