UWG WOMEN EDGE LIONS 60-57 TO OPEN GSC TOURNEY

CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia took advantage of a pair of controversial calls in the final two seconds of regulation and came away with a 60-57 home win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Tuesday in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. With the loss, UNA's season likely comes to a close with a 19-10 record.

With the Lions holding a 57-56 lead with a foul to give and West Georgia inbounding the ball, Jaclyn Heath was called for an intentional foul with exactly two seconds remaining. After UWG's Bre'ana Singleton hit one of two free throws to tie the game, UNA head coach Missy Tiber was then called for a technical foul. Aysha Harris then hit three more foul shots down the stretch to give the Wolves the 70-67 victory.

UNA had taken the 57-56 lead when Katelyn Nunley hit one of two foul shots with 29.7 seconds to play. West Georgia held for the final shot before calling a timeout with 9.6 seconds left. After the Lions forced a long shot on defense, the rebound was tied up with the possession arrow in favor of the home team. When West Georgia inbounded the ball with 3.3 seconds remaining, Heath fouled Singleton near midcourt and was called for the intentional.

North Alabama led 30-23 at the half and led by as many as 12 in the third quarter. A three-point basket by Heath gave the Lions a 39-27 lead before UWG rallied. A 12-2 run cut the UNA lead to 40-38 before the Lions extended the lead to 47-41 at the end of the period.

West Georgia opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run to grab its first lead of the second half at 50-49. UNA responded with a three-pointer by Emma Wallen on its ensuing possession and did not trail again until the closing seconds.

Wallen finished with 18 points to lead UNA. She was 6-of-11 from three-point range, giving her a school-record 76 for the season. It was the sixth time this season she hit at least six long-rang shots in a single game.

Michaela DeKilder also finished with nine points and 11 rebounds for the Lions.

West Georgia (15-12) was led by Jones' 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Wolves advance to the GSC semi-finals to face top-seeded West Florida.
