SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH SPLIT IN GULF SHORES

GULF SHORES – The University of North Alabama softball team opened the 2017 season with a 1-1 showing Friday at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores. After UNA defeated Barry 8-3 in the opener, Embry-Riddle hit a walk-off two-run home run to claim a 3-1 win over the Lions.

Bailey Nelson was 3-for-6 on the day with three RBI. Shelby Woodard was also 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI of her own. The Lions will remain at the event for four more games, including two on Saturday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. UNA will play Spring Hill at 12:30 p.m. before facing the University of Mobile at 5:30 p.m.

In the opener against Barry, Nelson was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Hannah Shollenberger hit a three-run home run in her collegiate debut. The Lions used a big second inning to take control, scoring six runs in the frame.

All of the scoring came with two outs, beginning with Nelson's two-run single to left field. The hit scored Sydney Sanders and Haley Mills, who each singled to reach base. Following an RBI-single by Madison Daniel, Shollenber's three-run shot to centerfield gave the Lions a 6-0 lead.

UNA pushed two more runs across the plate in the bottom of the third. An RBI-ground out by Amy Carden and a throwing error on the Buccaneers but the Lions ahead 8-0.

Barry was able to avoid a mercy-rule defeat by scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning. The Bucs added another single run in the sixth to account for the final score.

Raven Cole recorded the pitching victory. She allowed two runs off five hits with four strikeouts. Freshman Marissa Honeycutt tossed the final two innings, giving up a run off three hits.

The second game featured a pitcher's duel between UNA's Hillary Carpenter and Embry-Riddle's Kassidy Simons. The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Shelby Woodard led off the frame with a solo home run.

Embry-Riddle was able to answer in the bottom of the sixth. The Eagles got a lead-off walk before manufacturing the game-tying run on an RBI-ground out. In the bottom of the seventh Embry-Riddle got another walk before Jayla Jackson hit a two-run shot to left field to end the game.

Carpenter took the loss after working 6.2 innings, allowing three runs off three hits. She struck out two and walked five. Simons notched the complete-game victory, scattering three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Woodard also singled in the game to finish 2-for-3 at the plate.
