SOFTBALL LIONS FALL TO LEE 3-1

FLORENCE – Lee took advantage of a fielding error in the second inning to score three unearned runs, and held on for the 3-1 victory over the University of North Alabama softball team Saturday afternoon at Cox Creek Park. With the loss, UNA falls to 16-8 overall and 6-4 in Gulf South Conference play.
 
UNA got base runners in five of the first six innings, but failed to score until the bottom of the seventh. The Lions just missed tying the game in the final inning off the bat of Mackenzie Roberts. After a pair of singles put runners on base, Roberts' fly ball to deep right center was caught and the fence, preserving the 3-0 lead.
 
An RBI-single by Hannah Shollenberger made the score 3-1 before a walk loaded the baes with two outs. Lee's Taylor Moran, however, got the next batter to ground out to the pitcher to end the game. Moran recorded her fourth save of the season after coming in to face the final two batters in the seventh inning. Leigh Beatenbough (8-4) got the pitching victory for the Flames (15-7 overall, 6-4 GSC).
 
Hillary Carpenter (8-4) was stuck with the loss for North Alabama. She scattered seven hits and struck out seven with a walk. All three runs were unearned.
 
Shollenberger and Bailey Nelson each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lions.
 
The two teams will play a double-header Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
