UNA COMPLETES SOFTBALL SWEEP OVER TIGERS

FLORENCE – Sydney Sanders was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Hillary Carpenter pitched a complete game as the University of North Alabama softball team completed a three-game sweep over West Alabama Sunday with a 9-2 home victory.

The Lions wasted little time taking the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Bailey Nelson led off the frame with a single and later scored on Marissa Hancock's RBI-single. Madison Daniel also reached base on an error and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give UNA a 2-0 lead.

Single runs in the bottom of the second, third and fourth innings extended the North Alabama lead to 5-0 before the Tigers were able to score. Sanders led off the second inning with a solo home run to left field. Shelby Woodard followed with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the third.

Sander led off the fourth inning with a single. Pinch runner Destiny Wright then scored on Hannah Shollenberger's bloop hit to center field.

West Alabama avoided the shutout with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap. The Lions, however, used a four-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. UNA had six hits in the frame, including the first four at-bats of the inning.

A single by Daniel scored the first run, followed by a two-run single by Woodard to make the score 8-2. An RBI-single by Sanders closed out the scoring by giving UNA a 9-2 lead.

At the plate, Nelson was 3-for-4 on the day while Woodard and Shollenberger added two hits each.

Carpenter improved to 10-4 after the complete-game victory. She allowed two runs off five hits with five strikeouts. She also finished her second seven-inning contest without yielding a walk.

UNA will travel to Delta State for its next GSC series. The two teams will play a double-header on March 25, following by a single game the next day.
