LION BASEBALL SWEEPS MILES COLLEGE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama baseball team overcame a slow start in the first game and used an offensive explosion in the second to post a 4-0, 13-2 sweep over Miles College Tuesday at Mike Lane Field. The two wins give UNA an 18-13 record on the season.
 
In the opener, UNA went through the entire lineup before getting its first hit. T.J. Lockett's leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth inning sparked a two-run frame.
 
After Davis Elliott reached on an infield single, Kyle Hubbuch drew an intentional walk to load the bases with one out. Tucker then connected on a deep foul ball that was caught, allowing Lockett to tag and score the first run of the game from third base. Elliott then scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, UNA took advantage of three Miles errors to score a pair of unearned runs to push the lead to 4-0.
 
Shane Priest (1-1) got the pitching win after working the first five innings on the mound. He allowed only two hits and struck out six without yielding a run. Lane Wallace pitched the final two innings to record the save.
 
After being held to three hits in the opener, North Alabama scored 13 runs off 13 hits in the second game. A four-run first inning set the stage for the Lions at the plate. After loading the bases with one out, the Lions got a three-run triple by Tate Mathis to grab the early lead. A sacrifice fly by Peyton Sockwell wrapped up the scoring in the first inning.
 
Drake Tucker made the score 6-0 with a two-run home run to right center in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI-double by Brandt Holland and a two-run single by Payton Thomas gave UNA a 9-0 lead in the third.
 
Miles briefly closed the gap to 9-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning before the Lions responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and two more in the sixth. Holland picked up two more RBI with a double to left field. He finished the game 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI.
 
Davis, Elliott and Tucker also each posted 2-for-3 showings in the second game. Three UNA pitchers combined to limit the Golden Bears to two runs off five hits.
 
UNA returns to Gulf South Conference action over the weekend with a three-game home series against UAH. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a single game at 1 p.m. the following day.
