UNA SOFTBALL SPLITS TWO GAMES AT WEST FLORIDA

PENSACOLA, Fla., – The University of North Alabama softball team split a Gulf South Conference double-header at West Florida on Saturday, winning the first game 5-0 before dropping a 6-1 decision in the second contest. The split gives UNA a 15-7 overall record with a 5-3 mark in GSC play.

In the opener, Hillary Carpenter pitched a complete-game shutout to get the win. The senior from Hatton allowed just two hits in seven innings of work to improve to 7-3 on the season.

At the plate, the Lions struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. UNA later plated two runs each in the top of the fourth and fifth frames.

Marissa Hancock gave North Alabama the early lead, drawing a bases-loaded walk in the first inning. In the top of the fourth, Reagan Tittle and Hancock led off with back-to-back singles. Madison Daniel pinch ran for Hancock and both runs would score on a single down the left line by Sydney Sanders.

Three straight doubles to lead off the fifth inning gave UNA a 5-0 lead. Bailey Nelson started frame with a double to right center. She then scored when Sabrina Gilliam found the gap in left center to give the Lions a 4-0 lead. A double down the left line by Shelby Woodard then scored Gilliam from second to wrap up the scoring.

West Florida got base runners in the sixth and seventh innings but could not score. At one points, Carpenter retired 13 batters in a row. Seven different players had one hit each for UNA.

In the second game, UWF scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to break a 1-1 tie and pull away for the win. The Argonauts were held to six hits, but took advantage of 11 walks and two North Alabama errors. Only one of the runs was earned.

UNA struggled at the plate in the second game. Amy Carden's fifth-inning double represented the Lions' lone hit. She reached third in the inning, but could not score. Sarah Maloney struck out seven in the complete-game victory for the Argonauts.

The Lions got their lone run in the top of the third inning. Carden walked, reached second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch before scoring on a passed ball.

Raven Cole took the loss in the circle for UNA. She worked six innings, allowing six hits with 11 walks and two strikeouts.

The same two teams will play a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
