FLORENCE, Ala. --
Tyler Joyner pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener and
Davis Elliott delivered a walk-off RBI-single in the nightcap as the University of North Alabama swept a Gulf South Conference double-header from Christian Brothers, 10-0 and 2-1.
With the sweep the Lions are now 30-15 overall and 20-9 in the GSC. Christian Brothers falls to 13-32 overall and 7-22 in league play.
Joyner allowed just four hits in the opener and struckout 10 as he picked up his 10th win of the season and threw his sixth complete-game. Joyner, now 10-1, becomes just the ninth pitcher in UNA history to win as many as 10 games in a season. UNA scored single runs in the first four innings, then added a six-run sixth inning to end the game after seven due to the 10-run rule.
UNA led the nightcap 1-0 entering the sixth inning before CBU tied it. The Lions then loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and Elliott delivered the game-winning hit to right field.
UNA's first run of the day came in the first inning of the opener as
T.J. Lockett singled and later scored on a
Drake Tucker single. The Lions made it 2-0 in the second as
Logan Carter doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Chris Blakey.
Kyle Hubbuch doubled in the third and scored on a Carter RBI-single and Blakey singled to leadoff the fourth and scored on another Tucker RBI-single to make it 4-0.
In the sixth, Lockett reached on a fielder's choice and Elliott singles. Tucker drove in two runs with a single and Hubbuch followed with a two-run homer to make it 8-0. It was Hubbuch's 12th home run of the season and 25th of his career, moving him into third place in UNA history.
Peyton Sockwell and Carter singled to keep the rally alive and Ben Colley delivered a two-run single to make it 10-0.
UNA out-hit CBU 16-4 in the opener.
In game two, UNA starter
Bradley Bailey pitched five scoreless innings to open the game and struckout seven batters before allowing a run in the sixth. The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Lockett double and an RBI-single from Tucker.
CBU tied it in the sixth when Jeff Goodwin reached on a fielder's choice and Kyle Hindman drove him in with a double.
Dylan Stewart then came on in relief and stranded Hindman with back-to-back strikeouts.
After Stewart retired the Bucs in order in the top of the seventh, UNA began its game-winning rally. Carter singled and advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt. Blakey walked with one out and Lockett was intentionally walked to load the bases. Elliott then delivered the game-winning single with a full count.
Stewart (2-1) got the win, retiring all five batters he faced and striking out four. Bailey pitched five and a third innings, allowing just four hits and one run.
The Lions and Buccaneers will play the final game of the series on Monday at 2 p.m. at Mike Lane Field.
