SOFTBALL LIONS SWEEP CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

FLORENCE – A pair of home wins over Christian Brothers on Sunday gave the University of North Alabama softball team a 29-14 overall record and 19-10 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The Lions posted the 8-6 and 5-2 victories on Senior Day to move into fifth place in the GSC standings. The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game at 2 p.m. on Monday.
 
On Sunday, Sydney Sanders and Marissa Hancock each homered as UNA extended its winning streak over the Buccaneers to 12 straight games. In the first game, single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings helped the Lions pull away late.
 
After Christian Brothers plated three runs in the top of the first inning, UNA scored in the bottom of each of the next five frames. A three-run first inning tied the game. An RBI-double by Sanders and a two-run home run by Hancock made the score 3-3.
 
UNA got an RBI-single by Hannah Shollenberger before scoring on a CBU error to make the score 5-3 in the bottom of the second inning. After the Bucs added a run in the top of the third, Amy Carden's RBI-ground out score Reagan Tittle from third to give the Lions a 6-4 lead.
 
Christian Brothers plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game. The Lions, however, answered with an RBI-single by Hancock in the bottom of the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Bailey Nelson in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Hancock finished the first game 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI. Shelby Woodard added a 2-for-3 showing. Raven Cole pitched all seven innings to record the complete-game victory. She struck out five to improve to 9-6 on the year.
 
In the second game, CBU scored twice in the top of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead before the Lions answered with four straight runs. A sacrifice fly by Anna Gayle Norris and an RBI-double by Shollenberger gave UNA a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Nelson scored from first base on an RBI-double by Sanders, who later scored from third on an error to account for the final score.
 
North Alabama had scored first on Sanders' solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Lions have hit 40 homers on the year.
 
Sanders and Shollenberger each went 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Hillary Carpenter worked all seven innings to get the pitching victory. She scattered three hits with only one earned run to improve to 14-6 on the season.
