UNA SOFTBALL TOPS MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 4-0

CLINTON, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team got four runs in the top of the third inning and Hannah Bodenhorn pitched a four-hit shutout as the Lions salvaged a 4-0 victory in the final of the three-game Gulf South Conference series at Mississippi College on Sunday. UNA is 24-14 overall and in sixth place in the GSC standings with a 14-10 league mark.

After going down in order during the first two innings, UNA started the top of the third with a leadoff single by McKenna Ray. Pinch runner Madison Daniel reached third before Sabrina Gillum's sacrifice fly to center field scored the first run.

With two outs and runners at the corners, the Lions executed a double steal to score Katie Parr from third to give UNA a 2-0 lead. That brought Shelby Woodard to the plate, who launched a two-run home run to center field.

Bodenhorn went the distance in the circle for North Alabama, limiting the Choctaws to only six baserunners, with only two reaching scoring position on the day. After Mississippi College got a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth inning, three straight fly outs ended the scoring threat. In the bottom of the seventh, the home team had runners at first and second with one out before Bodenhorn got consecutive strikeouts to end the game.

The sophomore from Mount Juliet, Tenn., pitched seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the season.

At the plate, Bailey Nelson was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

UNA will play at Union for its next three GSC games. The two teams will play a double-header on Friday, followed by a single game on Sunday on the UU campus in Jackson, Tenn.
