LIONS DOWN UAH TO ADVANCE TO REGIONAL TITLE GAME

SAINT LEO, Fla.., – A two-run single by Shelby Woodard in the top of the eighth inning gave North Alabama a 4-2 lead and Hillary Carpenter recorded three outs in the bottom of the frame to give the Lions the win over UAH Friday in the NCAA South 2 Softball Regional on the campus of Saint Leo University. A 4-2 loss to Lee earlier in the day put UNA in the loser's bracket to set up the elimination game against the Chargers.
 
North Alabama will face Lee Saturday at Noon (EST) in the SR 2 championship game. The Lions must win twice to advance to the 2017 Super Regional.
 
Against UAH, North Alabama used three straight hits to cap a two-out rally to take the lead for good. After a ground out and a fly out, Anna Gayle Norris singled up the middle to keep the inning alive. Reagan Tittle then singled and reached second base on the throw home to put runners at second and third for Woodard. The sophomore from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., connected on the first pitch for a hit through the left side to score both runs.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Carpenter retired the first two batters before a walk brought the tying run to the plate. She then recorded her seventh strikeout to end the game. With 452 career strikeouts, she now owns the career record at UNA.
 
North Alabama struck first with McKenna Ray's sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning. After UAH grabbed a 2-1 lead with single runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, the Lions strung together three consecutive hits to tie the game in the top of the fifth.
 
Singles by Bailey Nelson and Sabrina Gilliam brought Sydney Sanders to the plate. Her one-out single up the middle scored Nelson from second to tie the game at 2-2.
 
UAH threatened in the bottom of the sixth when the potential go-ahead run reached on an error with one out. Nelson, however, tracked down a line drive in center field before throwing to first base to double up the runner.
 
Carpenter retired six of the next seven batters to improve to 15-7 on the year. She worked all eight innings allowing two runs off five hits.
 
At the plate, UNA totaled 10 hits. Nelson, Tittle and Hannah Shollenberger each went 2-for-4 in the game.
 
Against Lee, the Lions were held to two runs off seven hits. The Flames were able to get the leadoff batter on base in five of the seven innings, plating two runs in the top of the second inning, one in the third and one in the fifth.
 
UNA answered with single runs in the bottom first and third frames but ultimately left eight runners on base. Tittle was 3-for-3 with two singles and a triple. She also drove in two runs. Gilliam also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
Raven Cole (9-8) took the loss in the circle. She pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing four runs off seven hits with three strikeouts. Only three of the runs were earned.
