CLEVELAND, Miss. – After the University of North Alabama saw it 4-0 lead disappear in the eighth inning,
Ben Cooley delivered a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Lions a 5-4 win over West Florida in UNA's opening game of the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
UNA scored two runs in the second inning and added two more in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. The Argonauts finally got on the board in the eighth inning, knocking UNA starter
Tyler Joyner out of the game and then tying it on reliever
Dylan Stewart.
The Lions then got a leadoff single in the ninth from
Tate Mathis and he advanced to second on a sacrifice and third on a wild pitch. Cooley then delivered the game-winning single straight up the middle for the 5-4 victory.
With the win, North Alabama is now 33-18 overall. The Lions face Mississippi College in the second game of pool play in the GSC Tournament on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
Cooley got the scoring started Saturday when he was hit-by-pitch in the second inning, advanced to third on a
Chris Blakey single and scored when
T.J. Lockett reached on an error. Blakey later scored on a
Drake Tucker RBI-ground out to make it 2.0.
In the fourth inning, Tucker reached on an error and
Kyle Hubbuch followed with a two-run homer to make it 4-0. It was Hubbuch's 13
th home run of the season and 27
th of his career.
Joyner, the GSC Pitcher of the Year, maintained UNA's 4-0 lead into the eighth before giving up two doubles and a single, which trimmed the lead to 4-1 with one out. Stewart then hit the first batter and allowed back-to-back singles, which tied the game at 4-4.
With the game still tied in the top of the ninth, UNA closer
Channing Wall came on to record the final out of the frame and set the stage for the Lions' winning rally.
Mathis singled and was sacrificed to second by
Logan Carter. After a wild pitch sent him to third, Cooley brought him in with a single.
Wall (3-1) got the win, pitching just one-third of an inning. Joyner pitched seven and a third innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Stewart pitched an inning and a third and gave up a run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
UNA was out-hit 12 to six in the game.
