LIONS DOWN LEE 3-1 TO OPEN GSC PLAY

FLORENCE – After dropping the opening set against Lee, the University of North Alabama volleyball team rallied for three straight wins to open Gulf South Conference play with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Flowers Hall. The 17-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-18 win gives UNA an 11-2 record on the year and a 1-0 start in GSC play.
 
Jessica Austin and Lexie Bradley had 16 kills each to lead the Lions, who have now won nine straight matches.
 
Lee (6-2 overall, 0-1 GSC) hit .290 in the first set. The Flames, however, hit under .200 in each of the next three games and finished the match with a .154 hitting percentage.
 
The North Alabama team hitting percentage trended in the opposite direction. The Lions hit .100 in the opening set and .103 in the second game. A .371 showing in the third game and a .286 average in the final set then gave UNA a .212 clip for the match. Austin led all players with a .385 showing. She also had five blocks.
 
Jayden Davila-McClary recorded 38 assists and also turned in a match-high 18 digs. Ashtyn Kapovich added 15 digs while Sina Faulk also reached double digits in the category with 11 digs on the night.
 
UNA will continue GSC play by hosting West Florida and Valdosta State over the weekend. The Lions will play UWF Friday at 5 p.m. in a rematch of the last two GSC championship matches. It will also feature the top two teams picked to finish in the conference pre-season coaches poll. The match against VSU is set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Flowers Hall.
