EUBANK, MADDEN LEAD LIONS TO 66-58 WIN OVER VSU

FLORENCE – Ansley Eubank scored 17 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and came up with a big steal in the final minute of play to lead the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to a 66-58 win over Valdosta State Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. With the win, the Lions improve to 18-2 overall and 11-2 in Gulf South Conference play.

Playing without starting point guard Ivy Wallen, UNA overcame a slow start and used a solid defensive effort to maintain second place in the GSC standings. Valdosta State shot 29.4 percent from the floor, including a 5-for-26 showing from three-point range. The pre-season GSC favorites also turned the ball over 15 times.

The Lions also overcame foul trouble throughout the game with post players Brittany Panetti and Michaela DeKilder each fouling out in the fourth quarter. UNA was able to counter with a strong performance from its bench, which totaled 26 points and 16 rebounds on the day.

Darby Madden came off the bench to score 14 points for the Lions while Savannah Stults added six points and nine rebounds.

Neither team could find offensive rhythm in the first quarter. Both teams shot below 20 percent from the floor as UNA took a 9-7 lead into the second period. The Lions were able to extend their lead to 29-18 at the half.

North Alabama led by as many as 12 in the third quarter before the Blazers rallied. After a basket by Eubank gave the Lions a 35-23 lead, VSU closed the period on a 15-5 run to pull to within two points.

Emma Wallen started the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers to swing momentum back to UNA's favor. Another trey by Madden later gave the Lions a 53-42 lead. VSU got within five down the stretch, but UNA hit 8-of-10 free throws to seal the win.

After a free throw by Stults gave the Lions a 64-58 lead with 27 seconds remaining, Eubank got a steal, which led to two more free throws by Wallen to put the game out of reach. Wallen also finished with 14 points for the Lions.

UNA will play at Christian Brothers on Feb. 1. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. on the CBU campus in Memphis.
