FLORENCE, Ala. -- Just over two months ago, the University of North Alabama football program was eagerly anticipating the start of the school's first season as a member of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of Division I.
Now, some 10 weeks later, the Lions will look to close that first season on a four-game winning streak and send a group of 21 seniors off on a triumphant note as the Lions host North Greenville Saturday at Braly Stadium at 1:30 p.m..
UNA enters the game with a 6-3 overall record and three straight wins over Mississippi College, Jackson State and Shorter.
For the members of UNA's Senior Class of 2018, closing their collective careers with a win in their final game would be a fitting conclusion for the school's first Division I season.
This group of Lions enters Saturday with a combined 31-13 record that includes two Gulf South Conference Championships, two NCAA Playoff appearances and a trip to the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship Game.
The Lions will be facing a 4-5 North Greenville team that has lost its last three straight by a combined score of 107-38.
The Crusaders are also 0-4 all-time against the Lions, including 52-21 and 38-0 losses to UNA in 2016. The Lions are a perfect 6-0 all-time against schools from the state of South Carolina.
North Alabama's 2018 offense has been a picture of efficiency in recent weeks. The Lions have scored on their first possession of the game in each of their last four games and in six of the nine games this season.
UNA has also not committed a turnover in three straight games and the Lions have not thrown an interception in the last 24 straight quarters.
North Greenville enters the contest with UNA averaging just 71 yards per game rushing but the Crusaders are throwing for 248 yards per game.
Quarterback Will Hunter accounts for most of the offense with 1,913 passing yards and 15 touchdown passes. He has a solid group of receivers to throw to, led by Demajiay Rooks and Lucas Catalfomo with 45 and 39 catches, respectively.
NGU averages just 19.6 points per game and is allowing 26.1.
UNA quarterback
Christian Lopez leads the Lions, having thrown for 1,863 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 222 yards and five TDs.
