FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama pitching staff ran its scoreless innings streak to 30 and 1/3 innings as the Lions picked up a pair of shutout wins SUnday over Miles College, 1-0 and 5-0 at Mike Lane Field.
Paired with a 11-0 shutout of Miles on Saturday, UNA has recorded three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1995 and has not allowed a run since the first inning of a February 13 win over Union.
In the opener, UNA's
Shane Priest came within one out of throwing a no-hitter but surrendered a solid single back up the middle to Alex Bentley with two out in the seventh. The Bears then loaded the bases on a pair of hit batters and UNA closer
Channing Wall came on to strikeout Justin Bisharat to end the threat.
The only run of the contest scored in the fourth inning as UNA's
Kyle Hubbuch walked, stole second and scored on an error by Miles' shortstop. The Lions were held to just four hits by Miles' Dylan Johnson (1-1).
Priest (1-1) got the win, allowing no runs on one hit with six strikeouts and no walks in six and two-thirds innings.
In the nightcap, UNA's
Lane Wallace and Miles' Christopher Elias faced off in another pitcher's duel.
UNA got three runs on the bord in the first inning as
T.J. Lockett walked,
Davis Elliott doubled him in and Hubbuch tripled in Davis. Hubbuch then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brandt Holland.
Elias then settled down and held UNA scoreless until the fifth inning when Elliott singled and Hubbuch followed with a two-run home run to make it 5-0. It was Hubbuch's third home run of the season and the 30th of his career, tying him with Josh Willingham for second place on the school's all-time home runs list.
Wallace (2-1) pitched seven complete innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
North Alabama plays a single game at Trevecca Zanarene in Nashville on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
