SOFTBALL LIONS SWEEP WEST FLORIDA 2-1, 7-0

FLORENCE – North Alabama's pitching staff limited No. 17 West Florida to a single run off four hits in a double-header sweep Monday in Gulf South Conference softball action. The host Lions picked up the 2-1 and 7-0 victories to win for the 10th straight game and improve to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in GSC play.
 
Three different UNA pitchers combined to shut down the Argonauts on the day. Freshman Laken Distefano got both victories after coming on in relief in the opener, then working the first five innings of the nightcap to improve to 5-0 on the season.
 
In the first game, a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the walk-off win for the Lions. Veronica Westfall drove in both runs in the game. Her solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning tied the score at 1-1. She later singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. The two-out, bases-loaded hit scored Reagan Tittle from third to give UNA the 2-1 victory.
 
Meagan Garst worked the first 7.1 innings before leaving with the game tied at 1-1. The sophomore from Columbiana allowed one run and struck out 10 batters. Distefano entered the game in the top of the eight with one out and a runner at second. She threw two pitches and got two groundouts to get out of the jam.
 
In the bottom of the frame, the Lions loaded the bases on a walk, a hit batter and a fielder's choice. Westfall then hit a 2-2 pitch off the UWF pitcher's glove to drive home the winning run. She finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
The second game featured more offense for the Lions. North Alabama scored in four of the first five innings, plating seven runs off 10 hits to remain undefeated in GSC play.
 
UNA scored off an error in the bottom of the first inning and got an RBI-single by Kara Brewer in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Sydney Sanders and Bailey Nelson each recorded infield singles to drive home to more runs in the third inning.
 
After a scoreless fourth inning, a three-run fifth put the game out of reach. The Lions loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly by Sanders scored the first run of the frame. RBI-singles by Nelson and Brewer then wrapped up the scoring on the night.
 
Brewer finished the second game 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI. Nelson also drove in two runs and went 2-for-4 while Alex Brown posted a 2-for-3 showing.
 
Distefano started the game and struck out six in the first five innings. Brittany Ledbetter tossed the final two innings, retiring six straight to secure the win for the Lions.
 
UNA will travel to Lee next weekend for a three-game GSC series. The two teams will play a double-header beginning Saturday at 2 p.m. (EST) before wrapping up the series with a single game at 2 p.m. (EST) the following day.
