JACKSON, Tenn. --
T.J. Lockett,
Ben Cooley and
Kyle Hubbuch combined for seven runs on six hits and helped lead the
the University of North Alabama to an 8-7 come-from-behind win over the Union Bulldogs in a non-Gulf South Conference game.
Down 7-6 in the top of the ninth inning, the Lions tied the game as Lockett singled, advanced to second on a Cooley sacrifice bunt and scored his fourth run of the day on a Hubbuch triple. A
Brandt Holland single up the middle then put UNA on top 8-7 as Hubbuch scored.
UNA, now 9-5 overall, got its first road win this season. Union falls to 5-9.
UNA took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as
T.J. Lockett doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk.
Ben Cooley reached on a walk, eventually stole third and scored on a
Brandt Holland ground-out for the second run.
Union answered with two runs of its own in the second inning off UNA starter
Austin Nichols to tie the game at 2-2.
UNA took a brief lead in the third when Lockett walked, stole second and scored on a
Kyle Hubbuch RBI-single.
The lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs plated three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 advantage.
The Lions got a run back in the fifth when Lockett reached on an error, went to third on a Cooley double and scored on a Hubbuch sacrifice fly.
A solo home run by Cooley in the top of the seventh inning tied the game at 5-5.
Nolen Milton's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Union a 7-5 lead but North Alabama wasn't done.
Tate Mathis walked in the top of the eighth and later scored on a
Payton Thomas sacrifice fly to make it 7-6.
Channing Wall (1-0) got his first win of the season in an inning and two-thirds work. He stopped a Bulldog threat in the eighth inning when he got Hayden Lewis to hit into a double play. One runner reached base in the ninth on an error before Wall got a ground out to close the game.
Wall was the sixth UNA pitcher to throw in the game. Lockett was two-for-four with four runs scored. Cooley was two-for-two with two runs scored and an RBI. Hubbuch was two-for-four with a run scored and three runs batted in. Holland and
Peyton Sockwell had UNA's other two hits.
Union out-hit UNA nine-to-eight in the game as six of the Lions' hits came from the top three spots in the batting order.
North Alabama plays a three-game Gulf South Conference series Saturday and Sunday at Lee.
