SOFTBALL SWEEPS MONTEVALLO FOR 20TH STRAIGHT WIN

MONTEVALLO – A 13-2 and 8-6 sweep at Montevallo gave the University of North Alabama softball team a school-record 20th consecutive victory on Saturday. The pair of Gulf South Conference wins move the Lions to 22-2 on the season and keep the team perfect in league play at 11-0.

UNA had 24 hits, including four home runs on the day while a trio of pitchers combined for 22 strikeouts. The two teams will wrap up the three-game GSC series with a single game at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

In the opener, UNA broke open a close game with 10 runs over the final two innings. After Montevallo scored a run in the fifth inning to close the gap to 3-2, the Lions sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs off three hits. Kara Brewer highlighted the frame with a three-run home run to right field. Two batters later, Hannah Shollenberger connected on a solo shot to left field to give UNA a 9-2 lead.

After the Falcons failed to score in the bottom of the sixth, North Alabama scored four more runs. Shelby Woodard led off the inning with a double and later scored on an RBI-single by Katie Eakes. Brewer later drew a bases-loaded walk and the Lions added two more runs off another Montevallo error. The Falcons had six errors in the game.

Megan Garst got the complete-game victory in the circle to improve to 9-1 on the year. The sophomore from nearby Columbiana scattered six hits and struck out a season-high 12 batters.

Brewer finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI.

The win in the first game broke the previous record of 18 consecutive victories set during the Lions' 2016 national championship run.

In the nightcap, the Lions again used late runs to pull away before holding off a Montevallo rally in the bottom of the seventh. Laken Distefano struck out 10 batters in 6.1 innings to get the win. The freshman improved to 9-0 on the season before Brittany Ledbetter came in to record the final two outs and pick up her second save of the year.

Montevallo struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lions, however, were able to answer. Veronica Westfall led off the second with a single and later scored on an RBI-single by Bailey Nelson.

North Alabama took the lead for good in the top of the third. After a leadoff single by Brewer, Shollenberger hit her second homer of the day lead. After UNA loaded the bases, an RBI-groundout by Sydney Sanders gave the Lions a 4-2 lead.

After Montevallo plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the gap to a single run, the Lions answered again. In the top of the sixth, Shollenberger drove in her fifth and sixth runs of the day with a two-run single down the right line.

A pair of pinch hits extended the lead to 8-3 in the top of the seventh. Eakes singled up the middle before Harley Stokes homered to center field.

The Falcons plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh before Ledbetter came in to get the save.

Nelson, Brewer and Shollenberger finished the second game with two hits each.
