UNA SOFTBALL SWEEPS SPRING HILL 13-2, 10-2

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team used a pair of mercy-rule victories over Spring Hill on Monday to improve to 26-4 on the season. The Lions had 10 extra-base hits in the 13-2 and 10-2 non-conference wins.

Reagan Tittle led the way at the plate for UNA. The senior from Lynn, was 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and two home runs. She finished the day with five RBI and a 2.600 slugging percentage.

In the opener, the Lions plated a single run in the bottom of the first inning before breaking the game open with eight runs in the second. Title led off the frame with a solo homer to left field. UNA also got an RBI-double by Alex Brown and scored three more runs off Spring Hill errors to take a 6-0 lead. Later in the inning, Katie Eakes homered to center field. The two-run shot also scored Hannah Shollenberger, who reached on a fielder's choice.

Spring Hill plated a single run in the top of the third before the Lions added four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Bailey Nelson drew a leadoff walk and stole second before scoring on an RBI-single by Meleah Hargett. Title also doubled with the bases loaded to drive in two more runs. Eakes also scored on the play on another error on the Badgers to give UNA a 13-1 lead.

Another Spring Hill run in the top of the fifth would wrap up the scoring. Brittany Ledbetter (5-1) recorded the win after working the first four innings from the circle. She struck out three and did not yield an earned run. Sharley Miller pitched the top of the fifth inning for North Alabama.

UNA had 11 hits in the game. Nelson, Hargett, Tittle and Brown led the way with two each.

In the second game, the Lions scored in the bottom of every inning to get the win. UNA plated two runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third and single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. Harley Stokes' solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning evoked the mercy rule. It was the fifth home run in the last seven games for the freshman from Demopolis, who now leads the team with eight on the year.

An RBI-single by Shollenberger and an RBI-triple by Tittle gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the bottom of the second, Hargett singled to drive home a run and Kara Brewer recorded a sacrifice fly to give the home team a four-run lead.

North Alabama sent nine batters to the plate in the third inning. Tittle hit the first pitch of the frame over the fence for her seventh home run of the season. She has now homered in three consecutive games for the Lions. After loading the bases, UNA got singles from Stokes and Hargett before Brewer walked home another run to give the Lions an 8-0 advantage.

After Spring Hill scored twice in the top of the fourth, UNA regained the eight-run lead with single runs in the bottom of the next two innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Veronica Westfall doubled and later scored on an RBI-single by McKenna Ray to make the score 9-2 and set the stage for Stokes' walk-off homer in the fifth.

Hargett and Tittle each went 2-for-3 with Hargett extended her team-leading hitting streak to 15 straight games. Nelson, Stokes and Westfall also each went 2-for-2 at the plate. Laken Distefano scattered four hits over five innings to get the win. The freshman also struck out eight batters to improve to 10-1 on the season.

UNA will play two games at Albany State on Wednesday before returning to GSC play next weekend with a three-game series at West Alabama.
