LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama scored five runs in its final two at bats to down West Alabama 8-4 and claim the Gulf South Conference baseball series two games to one.
With the win, North Alabama is now 21-12 overall and 12-6 in the GSC. The Lions have won five of their six GSC series this season. West Alabama is now 12-19 overall and 6-11 in league play.
Shane Priest pitched seven solid innings for the Lions, allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks and nine strikeouts. He remained in the game through the top of the eighth inning with UNA up 8-4 before
Channing Wall came on to pitch two scoreless innings and preserve the win. Priest is now 5-1 on the season.
North Alabama took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and
T.J. Lockett singled in
Peyton Sockwell and Kyle Hubbush drew a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0. In the third,
Tate Mathis singled in
Logan Carter to extend the lead to 3-0.
West Alabama scored two runs in the bottom of the third and added two more in the fifth to give the Tigers a 4-3 advantage.
In the seventh,
Ben Cooley doubled in Mathis and Sockwell to put UNA back on top 5-4.
In the eighth,
Brandt Holland singled in
Kevin Brenning and then scored on a Sockwell RBI-single.
Davis Elliott then singled in Sockwell to make it 8-4.
UNA had 11 hits in the game and also drew 10 bases on balls.
North Alabama hosts Blue Mountain on Tuesday (April 3) for a single game at 5 p.m. at Mike Lane Field.
