LIONS ELIMINATED FROM NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNEY

JACKSON, Tenn., – Lee used a strong third quarter to take the lead, then held off a North Alabama rally in the closing minutes to claim a 66-64 victory over the Lions in the opening round of the NCAA South Region Women's Basketball Tournament Friday afternoon in Jackson, Tenn. With the loss, UNA wraps up its record-breaking 2017-18 season with a 24-5 record.

UNA led by as many as 10 in the first quarter and took a 30-29 lead into the half. The Flames, however, shot 62 percent in the third quarter and connected on a pair of three-point baskets to go ahead 51-46 heading into the final period. UNA got within a single in the fourth quarter but could never tie or take the lead.

Lee (24-7) led 53-46 after two free throws with 8:12 remaining. The Lions responded with a basket by Michaela DeKilder and a three-point play by Kenysha Coulson to cut the deficit to 53-51. The teams then traded baskets down the stretch. A three-pointer by Emma Wallen cut the lead to 61-60 at the 3:15 mark. Lee, however, was able to answer with a trey of its own on the ensuing possession.

Trailing by two in the final minute of play, UNA turned the ball over and was forced to foul. Two free throws by Lee's Lindsey Roddy gave the Flames a 66-62 lead with 25 seconds remaining. North Alabama failed to score, but got another chance after the Flames missed two free throws with 13 seconds to play.

A basket by Wallen with four seconds left made the score 66-64 and the Lions forced a turnover on the inbounds play. After drawing a foul, however, Wallen missed the first of two free throws and the Lions were unable to secure the rebound after she intentionally missed the second.

Brittany Panetti led UNA with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds. The sophomore from Katy, Texas was 9-of-14 from the floor and added a pair of blocked shots. Wallen also reached double figures with 10 points. She added two three-point baskets in the game and now shares a career record at UNA of 178 three-pointers. Teenia Harris also hit 178 treys during her four-year career from 1987-90.
