FLORENCE, Ala. -- A three-run home run by
Tate Mathis in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the University of North Alabama rallied from a 4-1 deficit to down Auburn-Montgomery 7-5 at Mike Lane Field.
The win was the tenth straight for North Alabama as the Lions improved to 30-12 overall. AUM falls to 17-25.
UNA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
T.J. Lockett walked and later scored on a wild pitch.
AUM answered with two runs in the third inning when two batters walked and later scored on a two-run single by Curtiss Johnson. The Warhawks made it 3-1 with a run in the fourth and stretched it to 4-1 with a run in the fifth.
The Lions left 10 runners on base through the first five innings but the offense finally opened up in the sixth.
Conner Kiser,
Kevin Brenning and
Kyle Hubbuch all walked with one out.
Brandt Holland then doubled down the right field line to drive in two runs and close the gap to 4-3. Mathis then followed with a blast over the right field fence to drive in three runs and give UNA a 6-4 lead.
UNA reliever
Bryant Claunch came on with two on and no outs in the seventh to strikeout the side and end that threat.
The Warhawks managed to score a run in the eighth before
Channing Wall came on to retire Nathan Langley to end that rally.
North Alabama added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Mathis walked and scored from first on a
Payton Thomas RBI-double.
Wall then pitched a scoreless ninth to record his seventh save of the season.
Jonathan Cook (2-0), the third of five UNA pitchers in the game, got the win, allowing no runs on one hit with three walks in one inning of work.
North Alabama hosts Delta State in a three-game Gulf South Conference series this weekend. DSU leads the GSC with an 18-4 conference record, while UNA is 18-6.
