SOFTBALL LIONS CLINCH GSC REGULAR SEASON TITLE

FLORENCE – Megan Garst pitched a four-hit shutout and the University of North Alabama softball team clinched the 2018 Gulf South Conference regular season championship with a 2-0 victory over Delta State Friday at home. The 15th straight win gives the Lions a 38-4 record on the year with a 25-2 mark in GSC play and solidifies UNA's bid to host the upcoming conference tournament.
 
Meleah Hargett and Kara Brewer each went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. The duo teamed up for back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the third inning to give North Alabama the early lead. Hargett's double to center started the two-out rally in the frame. Brewer then hit the wall in right center to drive home the game's first run.
 
In the fifth inning, Hargett drove in a run with another extra-base hit. This time, her shot to left center cleared the fence for a solo home run to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
 
Garst (19-2) made sure the lead held up. She struck out eight batters to record the complete-game shutout. The sophomore from Columbiana also extended her streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 34.2, dating back to March 30 against West Alabama.
 
The same two teams will play a double-header on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UNA Softball Complex at Cox Creek Park.
