SOFTBALL TOPS UAH 8-7 TO CLOSE REGULAR SEASON

HUNTSVILLE – Alex Brown was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored as the University of North Alabama softball team closed the regular season with an 8-7 win at No. 18 UAH on Sunday. The win gives UNA the series victory over the Chargers as both teams now turn their attention to next weekend's Gulf South Conference Tournament.
 
With a 42-5 overall record and 29-3 GSC mark, UNA will enter the post-season as the top seed. UAH (34-14 overall, 22-10 GSC) will be the No. 3 seed.
 
On Sunday, the Lions scored in the top of four of the first five innings before holding on for the win. Three different pitchers contributed in the circle. Laken Distefano (15-2) recorded the win while Megan Garst picked up the save. Veroncia Westfall also started and worked the first two innings.
 
North Alabama struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning. After two quick outs, the Lions strung together five straight singles. Brown drove in the first run with a hit to right field, followed by Reagan Tittle's two-run single through the right side.
 
Following a three-run inning by UAH in the bottom of the first to tie the game, the Lions would again take the lead. Bailey Nelson walked, then scored on an RBI-double by Kara Brewer in the top of the second inning. In the third, Mackenzie Roberts connected on a two-run home run to left center to give UNA a 6-3 lead.
 
After a single UAH run in the bottom of the fourth cut the lead to 6-4, the Lions added to their lead in the top of the fifth. With one out and runners at second and third, Tittle got an RBI-ground out to short stop. Roberts then singled up the middle to make the score 8-4.
 
A three-run home run by UAH's Alaina Hampton in the bottom of the fifth cut the deficit to 8-7, but the Chargers could never get the tying run home.
 
UNA managed 12 hits on the day. Roberts was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Tittle, who finished the series 6-for-10 at the plate, went 2-for-4 in the finale and also drove in three runs. Kara Brewer also had two hits with an RBI and a run scored.
