LIONS GO 1-1 ON SECOND DAY OF SOFTBALL REGIONAL

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team kept its season alive Friday evening with a 10-2 mercy-rule victory over West Florida in an elimination game of the NCAA South 2 Regional. UNA was in a must-win situation after falling to the losers' bracket earlier in the day with a 2-1 loss to Saint Leo. The Lions will play Saint Leo again Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA South Super Regional. UNA would have to defeat SLU twice to continue its season.
 
Against West Florida, the Lions took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before scoring five straight runs to evoke the mercy-rule. Three different UNA players had two hits each while Megan Garst pitched her second complete game of the day.
 
North Alabama (46-6) opened the scoring with single runs in the bottom of the first two innings. Reagan Tittle and Mackenzie Roberts each drove in runs to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
 
After UWF tied the game with a pair runs in the top of the third inning, the Lions regained the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Veronica Westfall scored from first base on Bailey Nelson's two-out double to left field. Kara Brewer followed with an RBI-triple down the right line. She also scored on the play on a throwing error to put UNA ahead 5-2.
 
All five runs in the sixth inning came with two outs, beginning with an RBI-single by Tittle. Hannah Shollenberger and Meleah Hargett also singled home runs in the frame to chase UWF starting pitcher Grace Gilbert from the circle. With the bases loaded, the Lions got the final two runs when Katie Eakes walked and Katie Parr was hit by a pitch.
 
At the plate, Shollenberger drove in a run and was 2-for-3 while Nelson and Hargett each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
Garst picked up the win in the circle. She allowed two runs off four hits to improve to 24-3 on the season. After working six innings in the loss against Saint Leo, she finished the day with 14 strikeouts on 229 pitches over 12 innings of work.
 
"In that last game, we played more like us," said UNA head softball coach Ashley Cozart. "We were loose and we had fun. In the first game, we just seemed flat. Now, our backs are against the wall and we are going to have to continue to fight."
 
Against Saint Leo, UNA let a 1-0 lead slip away in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs and a runner at second, SLU got a pinch-hit RBI-double by Maddy Lynn and an RBI-triple by Kacie Kelly to take the lead. The Lions got the tying run to second base in the top of the seventh, but could not score.
Three different Saint Leo pitchers combined to hold UNA to four hits. The lone run came in the top of the fifth inning when Tittle scored from third on an RBI-single by Alex Brown.
 
Garst totaled 123 pitches in six innings in a losing effort. She struck out eight with only two walks.
