FIVE-SET THRILLER GIVES VOLLEYBALL FIRST DI WIN

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., – Three players recorded double-doubles as the University of North Alabama volleyball team rallied for a 3-2 victory over Tennessee State Friday on the first day of the Chattanooga Classic. The 22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 15-10 win gives UNA its first Division I victory.
 
UNA trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the match after dropping the first and third sets at the Maclellan Gymnasium on the campus of Tennessee-Chattanooga. After forcing a fifth set, the Lions trailed 7-3 in the deciding game before closing the match on a 12-3 run.
 
Christina Ellwanger led the Lions (1-3) with 15 kills, including the one at match point. The sophomore from Simpsonville, South Carolina also added 13 digs on the day.
 
Tennessee State used a late surge to win the opening set. UNA led 20-17 before the Tigers closed the game on an 8-2 run.
 
It was the Lions' turn to rally for a win in the second set. Ellwanger had six kills in the frame as North Alabama tied the match with a 25-23 victory. Trailing 17-13, UNA got kills from four different players down the stretch. With the game tied at 23-23, a kill by Sophia Brandstetter and a hitting error on TSU gave the Lions the win.
 
Tennessee State had its best showing in the third set. The Tigers hit .269 as a team while holding UNA to a -.040 team hitting percentage.
 
North Alabama stayed alive by holding on for a close victory in the fourth set. Neither team led by more than three points throughout the game. With the score deadlocked at 21-21, the Lions took the lead for good on three straight TSU attack errors. A set point, a kill by Madison Ruble gave UNA the victory and tied the match.
 
The Tigers raced out to a 7-3 lead in the final frame, prompting a UNA timeout. The Lions responded with three straight points and eventually tied the score at 8-8. Another kill by Ruble gave UNA its first lead and TSU could never catch up.
 
Brandstetter added 12 kills for the Lions. Malaisia Stallworth also hit .261 for the match and finished with 11 kills. UNA setters Jayden Davila-McClary (28 assists, 21 digs) and Emma Ellis (13 assists, 21 digs) each turned in double-doubles while Genesis Benitez recorded a match-high 22 digs on the day.
 
UNA will remain in Chattanooga for two matches on Saturday. The Lions will take on UNC-Asheville at 10 a.m. (EST) before closing out the event against the host Mocs at 7 p.m.
