ASUN FAVORITE FGCU SWEEPS UNA VOLLEYBALL

FLORENCE – Florida Gulf Coast had four players with at least six kills in a 3-0 sweep over North Alabama Sunday afternoon in ASUN Conference volleyball action. With the 25-21, 25-8, 25-18 victory, the pre-season favorite improved to 11-5 overall and remained unbeaten in ASUN play at 4-0 on the year.
 
UNA (2-11 overall, 0-4 ASUN) was led by Christiana Ellwanger's seven kills. Hannah Symonds, Malaisia Stallworth and Joise Maldonado added five kills each. Symonds also added four blocks on the day while Jayden Davila-McClary had 13 assists.
 
The Lions were within striking distance in the first and third sets. In the opener, neither team led by more than three points. UNA got a kill by Stallworth and an attack error by the Eagles to pull to within a single point at 22-21. FGCU, however, closed the game with three straight points.
 
Florida Gulf Coast led wire to wire in the second set, holding the Lions to a -.286 hitting percentage. UNA got just three kills in the frame.
 
North Alabama held an early 13-10 lead in the third game before the visitors rallied. FGCU grabbed its first lead at 17-16 and finished off a 9-3 run to extend its lead to 19-16 with a service ace. UNA got consecutive points to make the score 19-18 before the Eagles closed the match on a 6-0 run.
 
Defensively, Catie Ladner had 13 digs to lead the Lions. Emma Ellis and Davila-McClary added nine digs each.
 
Cortney Vanliew led Florida Gulf Coast with a double-double that included 11 kills and 10 digs on the day.
 
UNA will hit the road for its next three ASUN matches, beginning with a Friday, Oct. 5, showdown at Jacksonville. The Lions will also travel to Stetson the following day before heading to New Jersey to play NJIT on Oct. 9.
