SAMFORD DOWNS UNA WOMEN

FLORENCE – An early scoring drought put North Alabama in an 11-point deficit and the Lions were never able to catch up during a 79-63 home loss to Samford on Wednesday. The first home loss of the season leaves the UNA women's basketball team with a 4-2 record on the season.

Samford started the game on an 11-0 run, holding the Lions scoreless for the first 6:03 of playing time. UNA was able to tie the game midway through the second quarter, but could never take the lead. The Bulldogs took a 42-26 lead into the half and UNA could get no closer than six points over the final two quarters of play.

Samford (2-6) held a commanding 42-27 rebounding advantage and had three players reach double figures in scoring.

North Alabama missed its first eight shots from the floor and had two turnovers while the visitors built the early 11-0 lead. A basket by Olivia Noah at the 3:57 mark gave UNA its first points and the Lions were able to trim the deficit to 15-11 by the end of the first quarter.

A jumper by Brittany Panetti briefly tied the game at 22-22 with 6:28 remaining in the second quarter. The basket represented the senior's 1,000 point scored at UNA. The Bulldogs, however, responded with a 12-2 run to regain a double-digit lead. A layup in the closing seconds gave Samford a 42-26 lead at the half.

UNA had its best showing in the third quarter, outscoring Samford 19-10 and trimming an 18-point deficit to six in the final minute of play. A free throw with 10 seconds remaining put the Bulldogs ahead 52-45 heading into the final period.

Another scoring drought, however, proved costly. UNA went 3:49 without hitting a shot from the floor while Samford regained a 12-point lead. Another basket by Panetti cut the deficit to 62-52 with 5:25 remaining, but the Lions could never get within single digits.

Ivy Wallen finished with 22 points for North Alabama. She added seven assists on the day. Panetti added 13 points, becoming the program's 17th player to pass 1,000 points in her career.

Natalie Armstrong led Samford with 24 points and 14 rebounds.

UNA will turn its attention to the Pioneer Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 29-30 in Denver, Colo. The Lions will play Alabama A&M and UC-Irvine in consecutive days on the campus of the University of Denver.
