IOWA STATE HOLDS OFF UNA WOMEN 80-72

AMES, Iowa – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team overcame double-digit deficits on three different occasions before running out of time down the stretch in an 80-72 loss at Iowa State Monday evening at Hilton Coliseum. The loss breaks a six-game winning streak as the Lions now enter ASUN Conference play with a 9-3 record. UNA hosts North Florida Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
On Monday, Iowa State held a commanding 43-23 rebounding advantage and was able to get to the free throw line 42 times. The Cyclones connected on 37 attempts from the line while three North Alabama starters fouled out in the fourth quarter.
 
The home team never trailed in the game. Iowa State led 24-18 at the end of the first quarter and stretched the lead to 12 points on two different occasions in the second. After leading 30-18 at the 7:28 mark, the Cyclones later connected on two free throws to grab a 36-24 lead.
 
Three-point shooting helped UNA get back in the game. Emma Wallen hit a trio of three-pointers during an 11-2 run as the Lions cut the lead to three in the final minute of the half. After going more than five minutes without a field goal, ISU got a putback with 27 seconds remaining to take a 40-35 lead into the break.
 
Iowa State used a 12-0 run in the closing minutes of the third quarter to grab its largest lead of the game. UNA cut the deficit to 49-45 with 3:35 remaining in the period. The Lions, however, would not score again. North Alabama had three turnovers and missed its next five shots. A buzzer-beating three-pointer by Iowa State's Rae Johnson gave the Cyclones a 61-45 lead heading into the final period.
 
UNA started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to prompt a ISU timeout. The Lions stayed within striking distance the rest of the way but could get no closer than three. A basket and free throw by Ivy Wallen completed a three-point play and made the score 71-68 with 2:20 remaining. The Lions got a defensive stop on the ensuing possession, but could not score.
 
Iowa State made 9-of-10 free throws in the final 1:43 to seal the win.
 
Emma Wallen finished the game 5-of-9 from three-point range and had 19 points to lead UNA. Kenysha Coulson added 17 points and eight rebounds on the night. Brittany Panetti added 14 points while Ivy Wallen had 13 points and 12 assists for the Lions.
 
Ashley Joens led Iowa State (8-3) with a game-high 22 points.
