UNA SOFTBALL SWEEPS SAMFORD TO STAY UNBEATEN

BIRMINGHAM – Harley Stokes hit three home runs, including a grand slam as the University of North Alabama softball team swept a double-header at Samford Wednesday. The Lions won the opener 5-1 in eight innings before getting a 7-3 victory in the nightcap to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Stokes' grand slam in the top of the eighth inning was the difference in the opener. The sophomore from Demopolis homered to dead center with the bases loaded to break up a 1-1 tie. Michelle Moore then recorded three outs in the bottom of the frame to get the win.

Meleah Hargett led off the inning with a single to left field.  After Lexie Harper reached on an error, Alex Brown drew a one-out walk to load the bases and bring Stokes to the plate. She connected on a 2-1 pitch for North Alabama's first home run at the Division I level.

UNA trailed 1-0 after Samford plated a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lions, however, answered in the top of the sixth. Harper singled to reach base and later scored on an RBI-double by Brown with two outs. Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

Moore (1-0) got the pitching victory after tossing the final 3.1 innings for the Lions. She struck out two and allowed two hits. Megan Garst worked the first 4.2 innings, allowing one run of four hits with eight strikeouts.

Veronica Westfall was 3-for-4 at the plate. Stokes also doubled and finished the opener 2-for-4 with four RBI.

North Alabama plated three runs in the top of the second inning to grab the early lead in the nightcap. The Lions loaded the bases with no outs before Danielle de Ruiter and Hargett each drew walks to give UNA a 2-0 lead. After de Ruiter reached third, she scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Shollenberger.

UNA added single runs in the top of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Stokes made the score 4-0 with a solo homer to left field in the top of the third. Riley Grace Honeycutt then led off the fourth with a walk and later scored on Shollenberger's double to right center.

After the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Stokes quickly answered for UNA in the top of the fifth. Her third homer of the day gave the Lions a 6-1 lead.  An RBI-single by Brown made it 7-1 in the top of the sixth inning before Samford pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the frame.

Shollenberger and Stokes each had two hits to lead UNA in the second game. Three different pitchers combined to get the win in the circle. Sidney Revels worked the first 3.1 innings, allowing a run off two hits with two strikeouts. Laken Distefano (2-0) got the victory after tossing 2.2 innings. She allowed two runs off three hits. Jensen Strickland also pitched the final frame.

North Alabama will head to Montgomery for four games at the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament over the weekend. The Lions will open play at noon on Feb. 15 against Jacksonville State. UNA will play host ASU later in the day before wrapping play at the event the following day against UT-Martin and Purdue-Fort Wayne.
