SOFTBALL SPLITS FINAL DAY OF BLACK & GOLD TOURNEY

MONTGOMERY – The University of North Alabama softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Alabama State Black and Gold Tournament, knocking off UT-Martin 3-2 before dropping an 8-6 decision to Purdue-Fort Wayne. The split gives UNA a 6-2 record on the season.
 
In the opener, Mackenzie Roberts singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Megan Garst (2-1) then retired three straight batters in the top of the seventh to get the win in relief.
 
UNA led 1-0 throughout much of the contest after scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Brown led of the frame with a walk and later scored on a two-out infield single by Danielle de Ruiter.
 
Neither team scored again until the sixth inning. UNA starter Michelle Moore scattered three hits over the first five innings. She left the circle in the top of the sixth after the Skyhawks put runners at second and third with no outs.
 
The first batter Garst faced laced a two-run double to left center to give UT-Martin a 2-1 lead. She recovered by retiring six of the next eight batters without allowing a hit.
 
Brown led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and reached third before coming home on Roberts' RBI-single through the left side.
 
UNA had six hits in the game. Meleah Hargett was 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
In the nightcap, Purdue-Fort Wayne took control with a six-run second inning, then held off a rally by the Lions to get the win.
 
Both teams scored twice in the first inning. After reaching on an error, Hargett scored from third on a passed ball. UNA then added a sacrifice fly by Veronica Westfall to take a 2-0 lead.
 
The Mastodons tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before sending 11 batters to the plate in the second inning. Purdue-Fort Wayne took advantage of a fielding error and added six hits in the frame to grab an 8-2 lead and chase UNA starter Laken Distefano from the circle.
 
North Alabama got back in the game with a pair of two-run home runs in the top of the fifth inning. Hannah Shollenberger drew a two-out walk before Brown blasted a home run to left center. Westfall followed with a double to bring Harley Stokes to the plate. The sophomore from Demopolis connected on her fourth homer of the season to make the score 8-6.
 
The Lions, however, would get no closer. Relief pitcher Shaina Eyre tossed the final two innings, sitting down six straight batters to get the same. Lauren McConnell worked the first five innings to get the win.
 
Brown finished the second game 2-for-4 at the plate to lead UNA. Distefano (2-1) took the pitching loss.
 
UNA will travel to Conway, Ark., next weekend for five games at the Central Arkansas Invitational. The Lions will open play Friday at 11:15 a.m. against Nebraska-Omaha.
