JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama baseball team was shutout for the first time this season, dropping a 1-0 decision to Tennessee-Martin in a neutral site game at Jim Case Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Florence but was moved to an all-turf field at Jacksonville State due to prolonged rain the Shoals area.
The Skyhawks out-hit the Lions six to five as the pitchers were dominant for most of the contest,
After four scoreless innings to begin the game, UT-Martin got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth.
With two outs, Casey Harford singled and then scored on a double by Sean Dixson.
The game remained 1-0 into the seventh as UNA's
Chase Best and UTM's Winston Cannon locked in a pitcher's duel. Best left the game after six and a third innings, allowing one run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Cannon went six and two-thirds innings and allowed no runs on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
The Skyhawks left runners on base in each of the first seven innings but couldn't push another run across.
UNA left the bases loaded on three singles in the second inning but only stranded two additional runners through seven.
The Lions best scoring opportunity came in the eighth
Colt Chrestman reached on an error with one out and
Reid Homan followed with a double to put runners at second and third with one out.
Tate Mathis popped up to the shortstop and
Peyton Thomas grounded to short to end the threat.
Cannon (1-1) got the win for UTM while Zach Denny recorded his first save of the season. Best (0-2) took the loss for UNA.
Josh Stillman pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings for the Lions.
The Lions and Skyhawks will play a double-header Sunday beginning at noon back at Jim Case Stadium.
