LIONS FALL SHORT AGAINST SOUTH DAKOTA STATE

CONWAY, Ark., – South Dakota State broke a 4-4 tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then held off the University of North Alabama softball team for a 6-5 victory Monday afternoon at Central Arkansas' Michelle Short Memorial Collegiate Classic. With the loss, UNA falls to 8-3 on the season.
 
In a battle of the final two unbeaten teams at the event, SDSU (8-4) took advantage of a trio of UNA errors and scored three unearned runs on the day. The Lions also held a 9-6 advantage in hits, but left six runners on base.
 
North Alabama took an early lead with a single run in the top of the first inning. A sacrifice squeeze bunt by Alex Brown scored Meleah Hargett from third.
 
The Jack Rabbits quickly regained the lead with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Three straight doubles chased UNA starter Michelle Moore from the circle. SDSU finished the inning with four runs off three hits with one UNA error.
 
South Dakota State held the 4-1 lead until the top of the third inning, when a three-run home run by Hannah Shollenberger tied the score. The blast down the left field line also scored Alex Brown and Harley Stokes to knot the game at 4-4.
 
SDSU used a two-out rally of its own to regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two runners on, a single to left field scored the first run and a fielding error in the outfield scored the second to give the Jack Rabbits a 6-4 lead.
 
The Lions pushed a single run across the plate in the top of the seventh, but could get no closer. Meleah Hargett led off the inning with a double. She advance to third before an RBI-ground out by Brown.
 
Danielle de Ruiter went 2-for-3 with a single and a double for UNA. Veronica Westfall added a pair of singles for a 2-for-4 showing at the plate.
 
Jensen Strickland (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Lions. She pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing one earned run off two hits with three strikeouts.
 
UNA will travel to Nashville next weekend for five games at the Tennessee State Tiger Classic. The Lions will open play against East Tennessee State at 2 p.m. on Friday.
