SOFTBALL LIONS SPLIT AT LIPSCOMB

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – After dropping the opening game 4-1, the University of North Alabama softball team recorded a 5-4 victory in the night cap to earn a split at Lipscomb Saturday in ASUN Conference softball action. UNA is now 18-15 on the season and 4-7 in ASUN Conference play.
 
In the opener, UNA held an 8-3 advantage in hits. The Bisons, however, made the most of their opportunities, getting a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning and another two-run double in the fourth. The Lions left 10 runners on base and did not score until the top of the seventh inning.
 
Lipscomb's Mandy Jordan (11-7) recorded the complete-game victory in the circle. She struck out eight and took a shutout into the seventh inning. North Alabama scored its lone run on a pair on infield hits. Madison Daniel led off the seventh with a single to third base. She reached second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring when Veronica Westfall beat out a throw on a ball hit to the shortstop.
 
Sidney Revels (3-3) started the game and worked the first three innings for UNA. She took the loss after allowing two runs off one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Laken Distefano pitched the final three innings, giving up two runs off two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
 
At the plate, Daniel and Harley Stokes each went 2-for-3 for the Lions.
 
North Alabama's win in the nightcap broke a seven-game winning streak by the Bisons. UNA held leads of 2-0 and 4-2 before the home team rallied to tie each time. A single run in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Lions broke a five game losing streak of their own.
 
UNA took the early lead with two runs off three hits in the top of the second inning. Stokes led off the frame with a single and later scored on Danielle de Ruiter's RBI-single  up the middle. The Lions loaded the bases with one out before a ground out by Madison Daniel scored the second run.
 
After Lipscomb scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third innings to tie the game, UNA scored twice in the top of the fifth the regain the lead. Alex Brown started the two-out rally with a walk before Stokes connected on a two-run home run to left center. It was the ninth homer of the season for the sophomore from Demopolis.
 
The Bisons answered again with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game to set up the finish. After de Ruiter was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Westfall reach on a Lipscomb error. The throwing error allowed de Ruiter to score from second and give the Lions a 5-4 lead.
 
Michelle Moore pitched a scoreless frame the bottom of the seventh inning to get her first save of the season. Megan Garst worked the first six inning to get the win and improve to 10-5 on the year.
 
At the plate, Stokes was 3-for-4 to cap a five-hit day. McKenna Ray was also 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt.
 
The two team will complete the three-game ASUN series with a single game scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
