LIONS RALLY FOR 5-4 SOFTBALL WIN AT MURRAY STATE

MURRAY, Ky., – The University of North Alabama softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 5-4 victory Tuesday evening at Murray State. It was the second straight win and third in the last four games for the Lions, who improve to 21-17 on the season.
 
UNA entered the final frame trailing 4-1 before sending eight batters to the plate and collecting four hits. Consecutive one-out singles by Meleah Hargett and Madison Daniel started the rally. After a walk by Veronica Westfall loaded the bases, Harley Stokes singled up the middle to score a run and cut the deficit to 4-2.
 
A ground ball by Alex Brown scored Daniel from third base to pull the Lions to within a single run. Brown stole second base before Chloe Deerman drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single to right field.
 
Megan Garst came on to pitch the bottom of the seventh for UNA, retiring three straight batters to get the save. Laken Distefano got the pitching victory after tossing 1.1 innings in relief. She did not allow a hit to improve to 4-2 on the year.
 
Murray State scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning and three in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Lions cut in to the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single by Jensen Strickland.
 
Hargett was 3-for-4 at the plate. Strickland and Harley Stokes both drove in runs and also added two hits each.
 
UNA will return to ASUN play with a three-game home series this weekend against Liberty. The two teams will play a double-header Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a single game at 11 a.m. the following day.
