SOFTBALL LIONS FALL 1-0 IN 12 INNINGS

FORT MYERS, Fla., – Following two weather delays, including one that suspended play overnight, Lipscomb scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning to record a 1-0 victory over the University of North Alabama softball team Friday morning in the second round of the ASUN Conference softball tournament.

With the loss, UNA falls to 26-19 and drops to the loser's bracket to face North Florida later Friday in an elimination game. First pitch is set for 10:30 a.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.

The game was halted Thursday night with Lipscomb's Sarah Higgins at the plate with a 3-2 count and a runner at second base. When play resumed Friday morning, the senior needed just one pitch to drive home the winning run. The double to left center scored Hannah Devault, who walked to reach base and advanced to second on a passed ball.

North Alabama's Megan Garst and Lipscomb's Mandy Jordan each pitched in and out of trouble throughout the contest. Jordan (17-7) recorded the complete-game shutout after scattering six hits and striking out nine. Garst, who threw 194 pitches in the contest, fell to 15-6 after working 11.2 innings with six strikeouts. The lone run was unearned.

Both teams had scoring chances throughout the game. Lipscomb loaded the bases in the first inning before a fly out ended the frame. The Bisons had runners at first and third with one out in the third when Veronica Westfall fielded a ground ball at third, tagged the base and threw to first for the double play.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lipscomb had runners at second and third with one out before Garst recorded a strikeout and fly out to get out of the jam. Devault led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a fly ball to the gap in left center. A diving catch by Meleah Hargett, however, kept runners of the bases for the Lions. For the game the Bisons put runners in scoring position 10 times before finally scoring in the 12th inning. Lipscomb stranded 12 runners in the game.

UNA left eight runners on base. Madison Daniel singled in the top of the fourth and reached second before being stranded. The Lions also had a runner at second with one out in the top of the sixth and could not score.

In the top of the 10th inning, Riley Grace Honeycutt singled and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout moved her to third, the game was halted for the first weather delay. When play resumed following the 47-minute delay, Honeycutt was thrown out while attempting to steal home.

Daniel was the only UNA player to record two hits, going 2-for-5 with a pair of singles. Higgins was also 2-for-5 at the plate to represent Lipscomb's lone multi-hit performer.
