WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS 74-63 DECISION TO FGCU

FLORENCE – Florida Gulf Coast grabbed sole possession of first place in the ASUN Conference standings with a 74-63 victory over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. It was the first loss in conference play for UNA, which falls to 13-4 overall and 4-1 in ASUN action.

FGCU seized momentum with a 12-0 run midway through the third quarter. After a basket and free throw by Ivy Wallen gave the Lions a 42-36 lead with 4:23 remaining, the visitors quickly turned the six-point deficit into a six-point lead and never trailed again.

UNA had three turnovers and missed its final five shots of the period. A jumper by Wallen early in the fourth quarter cut the lead to 48-44, but the Eagles quickly answered with a three-pointer and maintained at least a five-point lead the rest of the way.

The Lions were plagued with a season-high 23 turnovers, leading to 19 FGCU points. The Eagles also held advantages in rebounds (39-32), points in the paint (46-34), second-chance points (11-2) and fast-break points (19-15).

FGCU, which is receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Polls, extended its ASUN winning streak to 33 consecutive games. Keri Jewett-Giles led all scorers with 25 points for the Eagles (18-2 overall, 5-0 ASUN).

A three-pointer by Olivia Noah in the final minute of play gave UNA a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The two teams traded runs in the second period. A trey by FGCU put the visitors ahead 32-29 with 3:31 remaining. The Eagles, however, would not score again. Ansley Eubank converted a three-point play to tie the game and neither team scored over the final 2:22 of the half.

Four players reached double figures for North Alabama. Wallen and Noah led the way with 17 points each. Eubank added 13 points and seven rebounds while Kenysha Coulson turned in 12 points and six assists.

As a team, the Lions held FGCU, the nation's leading three-point shooting team to a 4-of-18 showing from long range.

UNA will host Stetson on Monday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
