KENNESAW STATE RALLIES TO TOP UNA WOMEN 59-56

KENNESAW, Ga., – North Alabama let a 10-point lead slip away over the final 6:25 as Kennesaw State rallied for a 59-56 home victory Monday evening in ASUN Conference women's basketball action. With the loss, UNA falls to 14-5 on the season and 5-2 in league action.

It's the second straight game KSU rallied to defeat the Lions at home. The Owls scored eight points in 18.1 seconds to force overtime a year ago before posting a 74-72 win. On Monday it was the Kennesaw State defense that paved the way for the comeback.

After taking a 51-41 lead with 6:42 remaining, the Lions went 2-for-10 from the floor with three turnovers. KSU closed the game on an 18-5 run, including 12 points from Alexis Poole. The Owls got five offensive rebounds down stretch, including a putback by Poole to take a 58-56 lead with 14.5 seconds remaining.

UNA called timeout to move the ball to half court, but a baseline runner by Ivy Wallen was off the mark and KSU grabbed the defensive rebound. Poole hit 1-of-2 free throws to extend the lead to three and the Lions missed a three-pointer at the top of the key as time expired.

North Alabama's 56 points is the second-lowest total of the season. The Lions shot 37 percent from the floor and made 10 three-pointers. Kennesaw State countered with a commanding 43-28 rebounding advantage, leading to 16 second-chance points.

UNA led for 35:03 of playing time on the night. The Lions led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter and took a 36-28 lead into the half. The largest lead was 12 points early in the third quarter when a basket by Ansley Eubank put North Alabama ahead 42-30 at the 6:10 mark.

After a free throw by Kenysha Coulson put UNA on top 43-32 with 2:35 remaining in the third quarter, the Owls closed the period with seven straight points. The Lions stretched the lead back to 10 twice in the fourth quarter, but could not put the game away.

Wallen led the way with a game-high 24 points. She passes Amber Rutherford for second place on the program's all-time scoring list. The senior from Anderson now has 1,620 career points, trailing first-place Amber Deline by only two.

Poole scored 19 points to lead Kennesaw State (9-9 overall, 3-4 ASUN).

UNA will play at Jacksonville on Feb. 1. Tip-off is set for noon (CST) at Swisher Gymnasium on the JU campus.
