JACKSONVILLE HOLDS OFF LIONS 67-56

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., - Jacksonville built a 23-point lead in the second half before holding off a late North Alabama rally to record a 67-56 home victory Saturday in ASUN Conference women's basketball action. The second straight loss leaves UNA with a 14-6 overall record, and drops the Lions to a tie for third place in the ASUN standings with a 5-3 league mark.

The Dolphins, who picked up their first-ever win over UNA, used a dominating performance on the glass to pave the way on Saturday. Jacksonville held a commanding 49-37 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive rebounds that led to 19 points. UNA also committed 21 turnovers, leading to 22 points for the home team.

UNA trailed 18-17 at the end of the first quarter, but faced a 41-30 deficit at the half after being outscored by 10 in the second period. The deficit continued to grow in the third quarter.

North Alabama made only one of its first 11 shots of the second half. A basket by Ivy Wallen made the score 45-32 at the 7:47 mark, but the Lions would not score again for the next 4:03 of playing time.

A basket by Brittany Panetti broke the scoring drought with 3:44 remaining, but the Dolphins had already built a 53-34 lead. Jacksonville then scored on back-to-back possessions to take its largest lead at 57-34 at the 1:43 mark.

The Dolphins made only one field goal in the fourth quarter, getting a basket early in the period to grab a 62-40 lead. UNA went to full-court pressure to start the rally.

Panetti scored 10 points during a 12-2 run. Her basket with 4:47 remaining cut the deficit to 64-52. Jacksonville missed its next shot on the ensuing possession, but drew a foul after an offensive rebound and hit two free throws to push the lead back to 14 points.

The North Alabama pressure kept the Dolphins scoreless for more than four minutes, but UNA missed its next five shots from the floor. Consecutive baskets by Ivy and Emma Wallen made the score 66-56 in the final minute of play but the Lions ran out of time. The Lions forced 12 turnovers in the fourth quarter alone, but could only convert them into 11 points.

Panetti had season-high totals of 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lions. Ivy Wallen scored 12 points to become the program's all-time scoring leader. She scored UNA's first four points early in the contest to pass Amber Deline (2000-03) for first place. Wallen now has 1,632 career points.

Shakayla Nevitt scored 19 points to lead Jacksonville (13-8 overall, 5-3 ASUN).
