SOFTBALL POSTS TWO MORE WINS AT STINGER CLASSIC

MONTGOMERY – The University of North Alabama softball team picked up two more victories Saturday, outscoring its opponents 17-2 on the second day of the Alabama State Stinger Classic. UNA knocked off Howard 10-2 in five innings before recording a 7-0 victory over Murray State to improve to 8-4 on the season.

Less than 24 hours after being held to just two hits in a 4-0 win over Howard, the Lions exploded for 10 runs off 12 hits in the mercy-rule win. Harley Stokes was one single away from hitting for the cycle. The junior from Demopolis was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and a home run. She finished the game 3-for-3 with five RBI.

Stokes started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. After Madison Daniel singled and reached second, she scored on Stokes' double to center field.

UNA took control with a six-run second inning. The Lions sent 10 batters to the plate and got five hits, including three that went for extra bases. A leadoff single by Hannah Shollenberger led to pinch-runner Katie Killen scoring on an error to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. UNA added an RBI-double by Danielle de Ruiter and a two-run single by Meleah Hargett to increase its lead. Consecutive RBI-triples by Stokes and Emma Latham then stretched the lead to 7-0.

After Howard responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, North Alabama plated three runs in the fourth to take an eight-run lead and set up the mercy-rule finish. Daniel led off the frame and was sacrificed to second before Stokes made the score 9-2 with a two-run homer to left field.

Latham and Shollenberger then each singled, with Latham scoring on an error to give the Lions a 10-2 lead. Brittany Adair retired three of the next four batters in the bottom of the fifth to give UNA the win.

Michelle Moore started in the circle and pitched the first three innings to get the victory. She allowed two hits and struck out three to improve to 1-2 on the year. Adair tossed two shutout innings, also posting two hits and three strikeouts. Each pitcher issued a walk.

Latham and Daniel also each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Against Murray State, Megan Garst pitched a one-hit shutout while the UNA bats produced seven runs off nine hits.

Garst took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning before the Racers broke through with a single up the middle. Murray State also had a hit batter and a walk in the inning to load the bases before a pop up and a strikeout ended the game. Garst (3-2) finished with 10 strikeouts in the complete-game effort.

A five-run third inning broke the game open for North Alabama. UNA opened the frame with five straight hits, including a leadoff home run by Georgia Land. Veronica Westfall followed with a double before back-to-back singles by Lexie Harper and Daniel loaded the bases. Hargett then drove in two runs with a single to right field to chase the MSU starter from the circle.

The Lions got two outs before Shollenberger singled down the left line to score two more runs and give UNA a 5-0 lead.

North Alabama added single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, getting an RBI-ground out by Daniel and another solo home run by Stokes.

For the game, Harper was 2-for-4 while seven other UNA players had one hit each. Stokes finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate with a double, a triple, two home runs and five RBI.

UNA will play Murray State again Sunday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Alabama State's Barbara Williams Complex.
