LIONS SPLIT OPENING DAY AT SHOALS BEACH BASH

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama beach volleyball team went 1-1 on the opening day of the Shoals Beach Bash, knocking off Huntingdon 4-1 before falling 5-0 to Central Arkansas. The split gives the Lions a 3-1 record on the season.
 
In the first match, Genesis Benitez and Samantha Shafer opened the scoring with a 21-10, 21-7 victory at the No. 5 spot. The remaining four matches all went to three sets.
 
The Lions clinched with victories at No. 3 and No. 4. After another UNA win at No. 2, the Hawks avoided the shutout with a three-set win at the top spot.
 
All five matches against Central Arkansas went to three sets with UCA edging the Lions each time.
 
In spots 2-4, UNA fell after winning the opening set. At No. 1 and No. 5, the Lions rallied after dropping the opener, only to fall in the final frame.
 
North Alabama will wrap up play at the event with two matches on Saturday. The Lions will face Hendrix College (10:45 a.m.) and Lincoln Memorial (4 p.m.) at the UNA Beach Volleyball Courts.
