UNA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOPS NO. 23 FGCU 61-55

FORT MYERS, Fla., – Emma Wallen scored a game-high 22 points and the University of North Alabama women's basketball team knocked off No. 23 FGCU 61-55 Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena. The win represents the first victory over a ranked opponent for the Lions, who improve to 19-8 overall and 10-5 in ASUN Conference play. It also represents a rare loss for the Eagles who entered the day undefeated in league play, including a 42-game conference winning streak that dates back to the 2017-18 season.

UNA led 34-31 at the half and withstood several runs by the home team over the final two quarters. FGCU entered the game leading the nation at 12.1 three-point baskets per game, but made only 7-of-35 long-range attempts on the day.

North Alabama led the entire third quarter, but could never pull away. After the Lions took a one-point lead into the fourth, FGCU connected on a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 run and to go ahead 52-49 with 6:28 remaining. The Eagles, however, struggled to score from there.

Following the trey, FGCU missed 12 consecutive shots from the floor and did not score for 6:24 of playing time.

After Wallen sank two free throws to pull the Lions to within a single point, a basket by Ivy Wallen put UNA ahead for good. Neither team scored for the nearly two minutes until Ivy Wallen found Kenysha Coulson under the basket for a layup to make the score 55-52 at the 3:40 mark.

A series of turnovers and missed shots by both teams followed until Ivy connected on a three-pointer from the left wing to extend the UNA lead to 58-52 with 1:08 remaining. The Lions went 3-of-6 from the free throw line to extend the lead to nine before the Eagles connected on a half-court shot as time expired.

Ivy Wallen finished with 14 points. Ansley Eubanks also tied a career-high with 13 rebounds. Emma Wallen's 22 points moved her into a tie with Amber Rutherford for third place on the school's all-time scoring list at 1,609 points.

Keri Jewett-Giles led FGCU (27-3 overall, 14-1 ASUN) with 19 points.

UNA will host NJIT Monday in the regular-season finale. A win would clinch a No. 2 seed in the upcoming ASUN Tournament. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
