UNA WOMEN DOWN LIBERTY 86-75

FLORENCE – Kenysha Coulson hit five three-point baskets and scored 19 points while Ivy Wallen added 18 points and nine assists as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team recorded an 86-75 home victory over Liberty Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win gives UNA a 16-6 overall record and keeps the Lions in second place in the ASUN Conference standings with a 7-3 league mark.
 
After trailing by as many as 10 points in the opening period, UNA outscored the visitors 22-14 in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Trailing 17-7 at the 2:21 mark, the Lions got a three-pointer from Ansley Eubank. Wallen then made the score 17-12 by hitting two free throws with just over a second remaining.
 
The two teams traded baskets to start the second quarter before Coulson took over. The senior from Huntsville scored the next eight points for the Lions. A trey by Eubank gave UNA its first lead at 23-22 with 4:14 remaining in the half.
 
Liberty led 31-30 in the final minute of play before North Alabama closed the half with four straight points. UNA took the lead with two free throws by Olivia Noah. After a steal by Emma Wallen, Eubank found Jaylin Austin for a basket in the paint to give the Lions a 34-31 lead at the break.
 
North Alabama led 49-42 midway through the third quarter before taking control with a 13-4 run. Five different UNA players scored during the spurt. A basket and free throw by Noah converted a three-point play in the closing seconds and gave the Lions a 64-48 lead.
 
The Lions led by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter before holding off a late Liberty rally. After a basket by Ivy Wallen gave UNA a 76-56 lead with 5:32 remaining, North Alabama would not connect from the floor again.
 
Liberty responded with a 15-3 run to cut the deficit to 79-71 with 1:32 to play. Ivy Wallen then drew a foul on a three-point attempts and hit two of three foul shots. After another defensive stop, Coulson added two more free throws to stretch the lead to 12 points in the final minute to put the game out of reach.
 
For the game, the Lions hit 19-of-22 free throws and went 13-of-25 from three-point range to earn the season sweep over Liberty. Eubank and Noah also had 13 points each. Keyen Green led Liberty (12-11 overall, 5-5 ASUN) with a game-high 23 points.
 
UNA will host Lipscomb on Monday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
