LIONS OPEN ASUN TOURNEY WITH 70-60 WIN OVER STETSON

FLORENCE – North Alabama overcame a slow start on Saturday to post a 70-60 home win over Stetson in the opening round of the ASUN Conference Women's Basketball Championships. The Lions' first-ever win in ASUN tournament play gives the team a 21-8 record on the season and sets up a semi-final matchup Wednesday against Liberty.

Ivy Wallen scored 20 points and added nine rebounds and six assists for the Lions, who shot 43.1 percent from the floor as a team and matched their win total from a year ago. The No. 2 seed Lions trailed by 12 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring the visitors in each of the next three periods.

Stetson dominated the opening quarter. Day'Neshia Banks scored 11 points in the first 10 minutes as the seventh-seeded Hatters raced out to an 18-6 lead.

Olivia Noah came off the bench to spark UNA in the second quarter. The junior from Cypress, Texas had eight points during a 23-6 North Alabama run. After Emma Wallen hit back-to-back three-pointers, a basket by Kenysha Coulson gave the Lions their first lead at 26-24 with 1:49 remaining in the half.

A trey by Noah pushed the lead to five before Banks connected on two free throws with less than a second remaining to make the score 29-26 at the break.

UNA continued to add to its lead with a 21-15 advantage in the third quarter. After Stetson tied the game at 36-36 with 5:30 remaining, a 12-2 UNA run pushed the lead to double digits. Five straight points by Jaida Bond gave the Lions a seven-point lead before a three-pointer by Wallen made the score 48-38 at the 1:19 mark.

Stetson would get no closer than six in the fourth quarter. Brittany Panetti scored all 13 of her points in the final period. She finished the game 5-of-8 from the floor.

Emma Wallen added 12 points on the day while Noah finished with 10 points.

Tip-off for the Lions' semi-final game on Wednesday is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
